University of Salzburg founds international Stefan Zweig centre University of Salzburg founds international Stefan Zweig centre ================================================================= CIVIS Highlights 17\. Juni 2025 To honour the legacy of the Austrian writer who lived in the city during the height of his literary career, the University of Salzburg has founded the *Stefan Zwieg House.* The new international centre will bring together the existing *Stefan Zweig Centre* and the *Salzburg Literature Archive* to further research and promote Zweig’s work and humanist ideals. ![](/storage/files/dsc9710-2019-04-02-stefan-zweig-zentrum-edmundsburg-lernraum-innenraum-lc-web.jpg) Photo © Luigi Caputo The centre will be located in the Neue Residenz, currently undergoing renovation as part of the Salzburg Museum and the new Belvedere Salzburg. The *Max Gandolph Library* will serve as the main exhibition space, providing an ideal setting for academic research, public exhibitions, and cultural events dedicated to Zweig’s life and legacy. Zweig’s heirs in London are generously donating valuable parts of his estate from his years in exile in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Brazil. This donation is seen as a step towards restoring Zweig’s international reputation and acknowledging his cultural and intellectual contributions. The author's niece, Eva Alberman, shares her memories: The Stefan Zweig House will be led by Professor Werner Michler, alongside German literature specialists Martina Wörgötter and Lina Maria Zangerl.
